A representative from our financial aid team can work with you throughout the application process, and discuss available options with you.
Because this is such an important and potentially confusing topic, we’ve put together this primer on the different types of financial aid that might be available to you. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.
Federal Grants
Federal grants, like the Pell Grant, are available to a number of students who are seeking post-secondary education. These grants are awarded based on a student’s FAFSA application, and the government’s determination of that student’s need. The government factors in the family size and financial situation of the applicant to determine their need, and awards the grants at its discretion. A federal grant can vary in size depending on need and the availability of government funds. The greatest advantage of a grant is that it does not need to be paid back.
Federal Loans
Federal loans are available to many students, and are again based on the FAFSA application. The major advantage of these loans is that they are subsidized by the government, which helps to keep their interest rates low. They do need to be paid back upon graduation or withdrawal from school. There are also requirements in regards to class hours and enrollment that must be met. These loans must be repaid, and generally, payments start six months after graduation or failure to maintain the eligibility requirements.
Federal Work Study
The federal work programs can be a good opportunity for students to help offset the cost of their education. Students are paid by the government to work for their school or their community, and the wages can be used to pay for their education. Opportunities and availability varies based on need, so check with your financial aid advisor for more information.
Private Loans
Private loans are generally provided by banks and other financial institutions. They’re typically based on credit, and may require a co-signer. Rates of interest can be variable, and payment terms can vary by bank. Private loans vary widely in terms and conditions and qualifications.
