The "Wear Now" Clothing Trend

There’s nothing more frustrating than going to the store and not being able to find clothes that are seasonally appropriate. Honestly, who needs shorts in the middle of winter? Ok, you may need some if you’re going to the Bahamas (consider yourself lucky if you are). All joking aside, if you live in cold climate, you’re probably in desperate need of sweaters and thermal underwear.

With the current recession, retailers are no longer getting away with selling clothes ahead of season. Consumers have scaled back considerably on spending. They’re only buying clothes that they need at the moment. In response to their shrinking profits, retailers have resorted to selling “wear now” clothing.

The "wear now" clothing trend is not just about selling clothes that match the current season. It’s also about creating clothing in fabrics that can be worn throughout the seasons. Consumers want to get their money’s worth, so now there is even more of a demand for clothing made from fabrics that are wrinkle- and water-resistant.

Even though retailers are experiencing tough times, thrift stores are thriving. The Salvation Army and Goodwill have reported 6% to 15% sales increases*. There also seems to be an increase in middle- and upper-class shoppers.
