How to Brainstorm Creative Ideas
Are you jealous of people who always seem to be coming up with creative ideas? While some people are just naturally more creative than others, creativity is actually a skill that you can develop. Start thinking outside the box with these tips:
Spend Time Alone
One of the best ways to come up with creative ideas is to start thinking by yourself. Brainstorming alone instead of in a team helps you avoid being influenced by a group mentality that can herd ideas in one direction. It can also give you a much better chance of expressing all your ideas. Many experts recommend that you do a lot of initial brainstorming at first, and then share your ideas with others. That way, you get the benefits of individual brainstorming along with the advantage of the different perspectives that come with a group.
Brainstorming alone is best done in a quiet place with just a pen and a paper. Because it is difficult to sit for any length of time and concentrate on just one subject in today’s busy world, help yourself by getting away from distractions like music, television, computers, children and spouses.
Be Patient
Most likely, the first idea you have is not as creative as you think it is. Neither is the second, third, fifteenth, or twentieth. If you want to come up with something really good, you’ll need to put some time into brainstorming. Don’t just stick with the first good idea you have, either. Try to come up with variations on every promising idea that comes to mind. The more choices you have to work with, the better chance you have of settling on the best option.
Ignore Outside Influences
One of the worst things you can do if you are trying to come up with creative ideas is worry about what everyone else is doing. If you base your idea on a popular trend or someone else’s great idea, your finished product will come across as stale and overdone. Don’t even worry about what others will think of your idea. If it is truly creative, many people will probably hate it at first. Stay confident, and you’ll be able to succeed on your own.
Don’t Be Afraid to Fail
Some of the world’s greatest ideas are the ones that never had any business even working in the first place. Creative people think outside the box – the only problem with that is that the box is where all the safe ideas are. If you want to truly be a creative thinker, you can’t be afraid to try something even though there’s a good chance you’ll fail at it.
Don’t be discouraged if your idea doesn’t work. Just try again. Sometimes, failure is the only way that your idea can get better. Remember that Thomas Edison tried over 10,000 times before he found a light bulb that worked. Persevere through your failures, and you’ll eventually find something that works for you.
